Introduction
The 40GL is a late Cold War era grenade launcher of Singapore origin. It was developed in the 1980's by CIS for use by the Singapore military and for export sales. The name 40GL stands for 40mm Grenade Launcher. At the time of development it was one of the lightest stand alone grenade launchers and was the first to open sideways.
Design
The 40GL is a stand alone single shot grenade launcher. It features a rifled barrel, pistol grip and tubular shoulder stock. When the charging lever is depressed the barrel can be opened sideways to load a grenade. When the barrel is swung back its locks again and the grenade can be fired.
Firepower
The 40GL is a single shot weapon that fires 40x46mm low velocity grenades. Besides the standard high explosive fragmentation rounds there is a wide selection of other rounds available. As the barrel opens sideways rounds of any length can be loaded. The rate of fire is about 6 rounds per minute. The effective range against point targets is 150 m. Area targets can be engaged out to 400 m.
Users
The first user of the 40GL was Singapore. Since then it has been widely exported. Recently Italy acquired the 40GL and it is produced under license in Italy.
40GL
40GL: The 40GL is a single shot 40mm grenade launcher. It was developed as a stand alone weapon, but with removing the stock and adding a mounting bracket it can also be used as an under barrel grenade launcher on various types of assault rifles.
